“Why me?”… “So That___!”

I am Dr. Steven Steinberg, The Values Doctor. I help you achieve more happiness at work and at home.

I’m a dentist with Parkinson’s disease who shares with you how to overcome challenges on your path to happiness, using the healing power of values.

In the blog from last week we noted that at some point, each of us has asked the question: “Why me?” “Why do I suffer with so many problems in my and life?” The real question being asked is: “In the presence of life’s challenges, how can I achieve happiness (joy and inner peace)?”

There are two ways to think about problems that lead to two different responses to the pain of those problems. The ordinary response is to ask why me-and answer “Because___.” You want to fill in the blank with blame. Blame makes you feel better. But it turns you into a victim. This does not solve your problems. The only path to inner peace and success is to shift the focus of your thinking from “What caused my problem?” to “How can I solve my problem?”

If the ordinary answer to why me-is “Because___” the extraordinary answer is: “So That___!” You fill in the blank with something purposeful, something of meaning, and/or something of timeless value. You have shifted the ordinary question from “Why do I suffer?” to “Why do I exist?” Your purpose in life is to add some unique value to this world. You are here to serve others in some special way.

Here is the key point: in business as in life one can focus on problems or purpose. . Focusing on problems causes pain and suffering. However, when the focus is on purpose, then the power of purpose overrides the pain of problems! The power of purpose, your “So That___!”, overrides the pain of your problems.

Pain and problems exist so that we can heal that suffering and solve those problems. Our purpose is to solve each other’s problems leading to extraordinary levels of success, joy and inner peace. Purpose is the flipside of problems. Without problems there would be no purpose.

Business people must be very clear about their focus. Is the focus on problems or purpose? Changing the focus from problems to purpose requires a paradigm shift, changing the existing way of thinking. But, as Albert Einstein pointed out, “The significant problems we face today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” By taking our thinking to a new level we can solve many of our problems.

Here are some tools for changing your focus to thinking and acting on purpose:

  • Whenever you have problems remember it is an opportunity to learn and grow. Most of us think that in life we either Win or we Lose. If, instead, we Learn from every situation then we never lose.
  • Suffering and problems are messengers whose message is: please stay on purpose. When you have pain, that pain is a signal for you to change. You have gone off purpose. You must bring your thinking and/or your behavior back on purpose. If you do not yet have a purpose, that pain is a signal to find one.
  • Discover your personal purpose. It should be something that serves others that-

-Aligns and connects with timeless values and wisdom.

-You find meaningful

-Others value (you solve a problem they have or create an opportunity for them)

-Gives you joy

-You do well

  • Create purpose and vision statements for yourself and for your business.
  • Our purpose in business is to create a unique systematic solution to a particular problem that people face. Create that unique systematic solution.
  • Create a USP. USP stands for:Unique Selling Proposition (the answer to the question why should I use your product or service?). It is also your Unique and Special Purpose (the answer to the question why were you put on earth?). It also stands for your Unique Solution to your customer’s Problem. Ask the following questions-

§ What is the problem that your company solves?

§ What is your solution to that problem?

§ What makes your company unique and different from other businesses?

§ What is your extraordinary business story?

§ Every extraordinary story has an extraordinary theme- an extraordinary purpose. What is your extraordinary theme-your purpose?

  • The extraordinary business or life is all about discovering a purpose that is so meaningful that-the power of that purpose overrides the pain of problems.

No matter what your circumstances are, or how painful and difficult they are, you’re completely free to choose your response to those conditions. Choose a response that is extraordinary. Choose to live on purpose. In business and in life our job is to transform this world from what it is, a world filled with suffering pain and problems, into a world that ought to be, an extraordinary world filled with success, joy and inner peace. Each of us has an extraordinary purpose for which we were put here on Earth. Each of us has a responsibility to discover that purpose. If we all focus on our purpose there is no limit to the problems we can solve, to the healing we can bring, or to the extraordinary harmony that we can create.

Why me? “So That___!”

“Why me?”

I am Dr. Steven Steinberg,The Values Doctor. I help you achieve more happiness at work and at home.

I am a dentist with Parkinson’s disease who shares with you how to overcome challenges on your path to happiness.

At some point you, along with every other human being, has experienced pain and problems obstacles and challenges. You may have wanted to cry out “Why me?” What you are really asking is why do I suffer from pain and problems? The question in life becomes: How can we achieve happiness-joy and inner peace-in the presence of these challenges?

“Why me?” The default answer, the ordinary answer,  to the question “Why me?” is “Because ____.” You want to fill the blank with blame. If you can blame your pain and problems on someone or something else, then it’s not your fault, you are not responsible. Blame initially makes you feel better. But it doesn’t solve your problems. In fact it increases your focus on past pain and problems. It ignores any possible future solutions to those problems. It turns you into a victim. As a victim you can never have gratitude. Gratitude is one of the secret to happiness. Thus, as a victim, you can never have happiness.

“Why me?” A better answer, the extraordinary answer, to the question “Why me?” is “So That___!” You fill in the blank with something extraordinary, something of purpose, something of meaning, and something of ultimate timeless value. By changing your thinking and your answer, you have also changed the question itself. Instead of asking the ordinary question, “Why do I suffer?” You are now asking the extraordinary question, “Why do I exist?” You ask, “Why me?” and you answer So That you can discover your purpose and actualize it in your life!

You are here on this earth to do something special, something extraordinary. You are here to add some value to the universe. In life you can choose to focus on Problems or Purpose. Focusing on Problems causes pain and suffering. However when you focus on Purpose, then:

The Power of Purpose Overrides the Pain of Problems!

The Power of Purpose, your “So That___!” can override the pain of any problems. Pain and problems exist So That you can heal that suffering and solve those problems . Our purpose is to solve our own and each other’s problems, leading to extraordinary levels of success and happiness.

Purpose is the flipside of problems.

Without problems you would have no purpose.
Without customers or clients with problems, you could not fulfill your purpose as a professional. I have problems so you can help me; you have problems so that I can help you.

“Why me?”  So That I can help solve problems.

What problems were you put here to solve? What problems do you face at work and at home? Your purpose is to solve those problems on your own or with the help and expertise of others. What problems do others face at your work and your home? Your purpose is to help them solve their problems with your expertise. You need to expect problems, since solving them is your purpose. Your problems themselves are messengers with the message: Stay on purpose.

The power of your purpose overrides the pain of your problems. That’s the secret to Your Path to Happiness. Without purpose, you are without meaningful focus. Acting on purpose is what leads to happiness. If you do not have a purpose, you must find one. Once you have found one you must learn to stay on purpose.

“Why me?” … “So That___!”

Here Is to Your Happiness!

Back to Blogging

I am Dr. Steven Steinberg, The Values Doctor. I help you achieve more happiness at work and at home.

I am a dentist with Parkinson’s disease who shares with you how to overcome challenges on your path to happiness. How do I do that? I help you achieve more happiness through the healing power of values. Life is difficult, life is challenging, life is a terminal condition. There is no cure, we all die. However, while we are here we can be healed. The key to that healing is connecting to timeless values and bringing those values into our daily lives at work and at home. Values are what is important to us. Values are what give us meaning and purpose  in our lives.  What you need in your life is a path to happiness. You need a set of “prescriptions,” a set of tools, for Your Path to Happiness. The primary path prescription is using timeless values to think and act on purpose.

Your purpose is the answer to the question “Why me?”  This question has 3 parts:

  1. Why do I suffer with problems?
  2. Why do I exist? What is my purpose as a human being?
  3. Why do I work? What unique and special solution do I bring to other people’s problems?

Each of us was put here for some unique and special purpose, to solve some unique and special problem. We need to find that purpose. The power of that purpose overrides the pain of your problems. Your purpose is your reason to be happy. You can be happy while you are on your path to happiness. You need to understand that there is a difference between “happy” and “happiness.”

Happy is what you choose to be.

Happiness is what you choose to become.

We are not just human beings we are also human becomings. We can choose to be happy at any moment if we are working toward our purpose. Happy is something that we choose on the inside regardless of what is happening on the outside. To be happy requires better thinking, on purpose thinking. Happiness on the other hand, requires thinking and acting on purpose. Happiness is the joyful actualization of your meaning and purpose. Actualization requires action and results. It requires time and effort. You must practice, you must journey down a path to happiness. Happiness is a destination and a journey. While you are alive you never fully arrive. Whenever we reach a destination of happiness life rears its ugly head with new pain and problems and we return to the path once again.

The secret is that you can achieve more happiness through the healing power of values. Using values you can determine your purpose (the unique and special added value that you bring into this world). Through that purpose you can chart Your Path to Happiness.  The power of your purpose overrides the pain of your problems. Your purpose is your reason for being happy. You can choose to be happy while on your path to achieving more happiness.

Introducing my NEW website!

Hello to all of you out there in cyberspace.  Welcome to my new website. I am excited about this major step forward in my ability to bring you extraordinary value. Here is the story of the evolution of this new website and our new business name.

The time had come to upgrade my old website, www.speakingofvalues.com.  While designing the website it became clear that I was not simply speaking about values.  I had moved on to the point that I was using values as a tool for solving problems.  I was using values as a tool for understanding and treating the pain of those problems. I was “prescribing” values for overcoming challenging situations and becoming extraordinary. It became clear that I had become “The Values Dr.”

For those of you who do not know me, let me introduce myself and for those of you who do know me, let me reintroduce myself.

I am Dr. Steve Steinberg, “The Values Doctor.” I am a dentist with Parkinson’s disease. I work with people and organizations who want to overcome obstacles and become extraordinary.

I have developed a unique set of problem-solving tools that I call The Path to Becoming Extraordinary.  The Path is my prescription for transforming your work and life from ordinary to extraordinary.  The path is a system that combines scientific and spiritual wisdom.  The prime tool of the system is thinking and acting on purpose. In other words, searching for truth and doing the right thing. Another tool, the three-step extraordinary process, empowers you to connect to eternal values and then actualize those timeless values every day.  This process transforms your work and life from ordinary to Extraordinary.  The system includes tools for measuring results so that you can track your transformation.  Using the path to becoming extraordinary you can achieve extraordinary levels of success and happiness.  I’ve been a business owner-dentist for 25 years and a speaker for 30 years and bring that experience into my speaking.

I do keynote, inspirational and motivational speaking as well as breakout sessions and seminars.

My most recent presentation is called:

“Why Me?” Your Extraordinary Answer.

Please come back to this site over the next days, weeks and month as we create a site that should serve many of your needs.  Please send your comments and suggestions.  The only way we can improve is with your input into   creating a site of which you will approve.

Regards,
